Wangari Maathai, an environmental activist, campaigner for women’s rights and politician, was the winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace, and has received many other accolades worldwide.
She will be remembered for her dedication, courage, enthusiasm and inspiration towards human rights and the environment, leaving a strong legacy in her home country, Kenya, and also having a profound effect on global issues such as climate change. In Tanzania, she was engaged in promoting good environmental governance, always highlighting the need to meet the real needs of poorer people, especially women.
