The investments in this new project is done jointly with farmers who have developed experiences in many decades in Tanzania, and who has long management experiences from larger plantations in the region. Another investor in this project is represented by African Agriculture Company, an investment fund funded by the Rockefeller and Gatsby Charitable Foundation .
The plantation has 80 hectare available for avocado trees but the plan is to expand to 140 hectare already in 2010, with the aim to involve local farmers in the production. The first harvest will take place towards the end of 2010 before they will be transported on ships to Europe
"This investment will contribute to an alternative source of income for the small scale farmers in the region" says Norfund Director Kjell Roland. He explains that this development will have great impact for creating jobs and an extra source of income for the local population, and especially women.
