Last updated: 23/02/2011 // In celebration of the reconciliation in Zanzibar, the Norwegian Minister of the Environment and International Development,Mr. Erik Solheim, together with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and UN-HABITAT launched a new Opportunity Fund for Youth in Zanzibar on Sunday 20th February 2011 at Zanzibar Ocean View Hotel.

Norway will provide USD 100 000 to the fund that was launched by Minister of Social Welfare, Youth, Women and Children, Hon. Zainab Omar Mohammed, together with  Norwegian Minister of the Environment and International Development, H.E. Erik Solheim.

The fund will be managed by UN-HABITAT and youth-led organisations in Zanzibar are encouraged to send their applications to UN-HABITAT.  The purpose of the fund is to promote projects on employment, entrepreneurship, governance, shelter and secure tenure for youth living in urban centres.

- Young people are the future for a united Zanzibar. While the youth are celebrating unity in Zanzibar, they also need to be given opportunities to create development for themselves. The political leaders of Zanzibar have understood this and have requested Norway to help bring opportunities for youth. I am very happy to participate in the launch of this new Opportunity Fund for Youth, said Minister Solheim.
