- This event marks a new era on the availability of clean water for Kisarawe II Ward and provide hope for a community which lacked clean and safe water sources like many of the areas around and in Dar es Salaam, says Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Svein Bæra of the Norwegian Embassy.
Before this promising achievement, the residents in Kisarawe-II used to obtain water for their various uses from shallow, uncovered and unsafe boreholes. The situation threatened the health and productivity of the people in the area.
During exploratory drilling in 2006, the team struck groundwater of high drinking water quality and the so called Kimbiji deep aquifer was discovered. This aquifer can be a large and prospective fresh water source that could significantly contribute to the water supply of Dar es Salaam in the future. After this overwhelming discovery, the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA), was under public pressure to urgently develop a water supply scheme from this artesian source which had been flowing ever since its discovery.
The Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Norwegian Church Aid supported Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA) to implement the project intended to improve the livelihood of the communities in Kisarawe II Ward through improved access to water supply and sanitation services. The scheme will directly benefit:
• 1,915 people in the villages of Kichangani and Mwaninga
• 1,350 students of Kisarawe II Secondary School and
• 574 Chekeni Primary school pupils.
• 35 people around Chekeni Mwasonga dispensary
The water scheme has two water sources with independent pipe networks:-
• The first water source is the artesian well which will provide water to Kichangani community. Rehabilitation was done to 14 Water Points and 2 Riser Tanks. In addition, 2 new Water Points were constructed.
• The second water source is a borehole close to the Mwaninga Dispensary which will provide water to the dispensary, Kisarawe II Secondary School and Mwaninga village community. A new Tank Riser of 9m high has been constructed at the dispensary as well as 3 new Water Points in Mwaninga village.
The water scheme is comprised of pumping systems, elevated storage tanks and distribution networks. The installation of two pumping units which uses a diesel generator and solar panels has been done in the artesian well and the deep bore hole respectively.
