Long lasting power cuts have in the past been a hazard on Unguja, Zanzibar, threatening health and economy. A new 25 MW emergency and back-up generator capacity is now in place, with funding from Norway, Sweden and the UK.

4.000 residents have now clean water available in their villages, schools and dispensary. DAWASA, Norwegian Churh Aid and the Norwegian Embassy have worked together to establish the new Water supply, which was openened by the Hon. Minister for the Ministry of Water and Irrigation on 28 June 2010.

An agreement was signed on 5 May 2010 by Charge d’ Affaires Mr Svein Baera, Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dar es Salaam and Chairman Eng. Prof. Ninatubu Lema from Engineers Registration Board (ERB). The Norwegian funds will support the Engineers Registration Board of Tanzania (ERB) and its “Structured Engineers Apprenticeship Programme” with approximately 2 million USD over 5 years.

The Norwegian Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Jon Lomøy, met President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on Wednesday, March 31st 2010, to bid farewell as he is leaving his post in Dar es Salaam. Mr Lomøy has been assigned as Director of Development Co-operation Directorate within the OECD in Paris, where he will continue to work with development issues.

In the beginning of March, 2010, a regional workshop addressing the challenges posed by the urban growth and transformation in East Africa took place in Dar es Salaam. The workshop was arranged as a collaboration between SEARCH/NOMA participants and their partners which include The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Oslo School of Architecture and Design.

11-16 February, the Old Fort in Zanzibar turns into the main stage for one of East Africa’s largest music events. The festival attracts talents from all over East Africa, but also big names from other parts of the world. Sauti za Busara means ‘songs of wisdom’ in Kiswahili and it is a week of great performances, dance, theater and music in Stone Town.
