"When equally qualified men and women apply for a job, I put my foot down and chose the woman", says Dr Joyce Martha Singano, Director of Finance and Administration at TPDC.
This sector needs more qualified women continues Dr Singano who addressed the participants at a “Gender & Energy” forum at the Embassy of Norway on 8 October 2009.
The meeting is part of the Embassy’s initiative to promote gender equality in the energy sector. In addition to trying to mainstream gender issues in all programmes within the energy sector it is also agreed to support concrete programmes and initiatives within the area. The forum meeting was one such initiative which steam from a request from women at high-level positions within the energy sector to have a platform for networking and exchange ideas, says Marianne Damhaug, Counsellor for Energy at the Embassy. “After this engaged and inspiring speech by Dr. Singano we look forward to continue the Embassy’s efforts to facilitate more effective gender measures in Norway’s energy sector cooperation in Tanzania”, concludes Mrs. Damhaug.
