Norway is supporting the technical assistance for operationalisation of the EAPP Coordination Centre (CC) and Independent Regulatory Body (IRB). These bodies will contribute to increased access to reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly energy in rural areas in Eastern Africa through a competitive market.
Norway's Ambassador to Ethiopia, Jens-Petter Kjemprud, signed an agreement with the EAPP in Addis Ababa in November 2009. The project has a budget of NOK 15 Million (USD 2.2 Million) and stretches through December 2011.
Tanzania gives high priority to powertrade within the region, with a special focus on the interconnecter between Kenya and Tanzania, where Norway is contributing by facilitating with USD 3.4 million.
Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern DRC and Tanzania are now members of the EAPP, leaving Uganda as the only country in the region outside EAPP. Tanzania signed their membership during a ministerial meeting in Khartoum 5 to 7 March 2010 where the Norway was represented by Marianna Damhaug from the Embassy in Dar es Salaam.
At this point it seems like Libya is the next country to come on board and become a member of the EAPP.
