Christmas celebrated with Tanzanian gospel

Last updated: 29/11/2010 // The Norwegian group Garness started their Christmas tour in Dar es Salaam, where they shared the stage with Kijitonyama Upendo choir.

The two groups had been rehearsing together for a week, and the singers were performing in Swahili, English and Norwegian.

The two singers from Oslo Gospel Choir and the group Garness, Ingelin Reigstad Norheim and Hildegunn Garnes Reigstad, did however find the dancing to be the most challenging, when they joined the Tanzanian choir in a traditional Tanzanian gospel song.

-It is two rather different styles which meet, and we have learned a lot from each other, says Ingelin about the cooperation with the Tanzanian choir.

More than 700 people had come to Msasani Lutheran church 27 November to enjoy the Christmas gospel, which was followed by gløgg and gingerbread.

-This is just one of the many signs of the good cooperation between Tanzania and Norway, said ambassador designate Ingunn Klepsvik, while welcoming the guests.

Reverend George Fupe, who himself has studied in Norway, used the occasion to express appreciation of the Norwegian Church Aid and the Norwegian Embassy’s support to the inter-church work in Tanzania.

The Christmas Gospel Concert was followed by two performances by the two Norwegian singers, two Norwegian musicians and the Kijitonyama Upendo choir during the Sunday morning services in St. Peters Church and Msasani Lutheran Church.
