The submarine cable providing electricity from mainland to Pemba was officially opened 3 June 2010. The cable has a cost of 400 million Norwegian kroner and is financed by the Governments of Tanzania, Zanzibar and Norway. As a symbol of reconciliation and unity the celebration was attended by leaders of CCM and CUF jointly.

Mpingo Conservation Project (MCP) has received a grant worth USD 1,948,123 from the Royal Norwegian Embassy to implement a pilot Project for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) in Kilwa District. The title of this Project is ‘combining REDD, PFM and FSC certification in South-Eastern Tanzania’ and it is a four year project.

Norway and Clinton Foundation work together to improve health services in Tanzania. Last Tuesday former President Bill Clinton came to Mtwara to inspect the progress personally. He was impressed by the impact of clean solar energy at Kitera Health Center.

Norway is supporting the development of power trade in East Africa with USD 2.2 million, through the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP). Tanzania joined Ethiopia and six other countries as an EAPP member in March 2010.
